To what may seem like crossing a milestone for many, has just been made possible by the Reliance Retail’s fashion and lifestyle retailing business. To go by the presentation of the company’s latest investor, it implies that the retailing business of the company crossed Rs.10, 000 crore milestone in 2018-19.
In the presentation, it has been stated by the company that there has been addition of 333 Trends stores over last two years and that is said to be the largest in India’s fashion retail. Moreover, 200 new stores out of this were added last fiscal only. 65 smaller stores were added in tier III and IV towns from the list. Categories such as footwear, jewellery and cosmetic inside Trends stores had been added by Reliance during last fiscal. Till March 2019, a total of 676 Trends stores have been recorded in the country.
Though the contribution of the business had slipped down from 10.3% of total sales in FY18 to 8.4% in FY19, yet it was able to recover well. In 2018-19 the fashion and lifestyle retail business revenue of Reliance Retail was Rs.10, 967 crore while in the previous fiscal it was Rs. 7, 127 crore.
Fashion and lifestyle segment is the smallest for Reliance Retail and the largest at 33.5% is the connectivity business including Reliance Jio Infocomm subscriptions and recharges. This is followed by consumer electronics and smartphone retail at 30%, grocery at 17.9%, fuel retail at 10.2% and fashion and lifestyle at 8.4% in FY19.
Multiple brands and stores have been positioned by Reliance Retail for each consumer and income segment in fashion and lifestyle. This includes Reliance Market and Smart in value apparel and Trends and Footprint in value fashion.
In the mid and premium segment, the company entails brands like Ajio, Marks & Spencer, Project Eve and Reliance Jewels. There are international brands like The White Crow and Ajio Gold in the luxury segment.
