Current Chairman of Council for Leather Exports (CLE) P.R. Aqeel Ahmed has been elected as the new Chairman of Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC). The announcement took place at the meeting of Governing Council of LSSC held recently in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Ahmed will serve the skill council for a period of two years. He has replaced Habib Hussain, Director, AV Thomas Leather & Allied Products (Chennai), who was the first Chairman of the council.
Also the Chairman & Managing Director of Florence Shoe (Chennai), Aqeel is also the Member of Managing Committee of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) ; Governing Body Member in Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) and as member of Executive Committees of All India Hide and Skin Tanners and Merchants Association (AISHTMA), South India Shoe Manufacturers Association (SISMA), Indian Shoe Federation (ISF) and Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers and Exporters Association (IFLMEA).
Having experience of more than 35 years in the leather and footwear industry, Aqeel has held various roles in different organisations and institutions. In the past, he held the position of Vice- Chairman, Council for Leather Exports; Regional Chairman (South), Council for Leather Exports for three consecutive terms; President, Indian Shoe Federation (3 Terms) ; President, South India Shoe Manufacturers Association (SISMA) – 2 terms ; Chairman, Indian Leather Industry Foundation - ILIFO ( 2 Terms) and Chairman, Consortium of Shoes & Products Manufacturers Private Limited.
Started as a non-profit organisation in 2012, Leather Sector Skill Council operates under the aegis of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), with the prime objective of skilling youth for leather, leather products and footwear industry. It is also the National Monitoring Unit of the Human Resources Development (HRD) Scheme implemented by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under Indian Footwear, Leather and Accessories Development Programme (IFLADP).
